Multiple Scleriosis: Causes And Symptoms

Multiple sclerosis is the degeneration of the nerves of the central nervous system, the brain and the spinal cord. Electrical impulses that travel to the brain through the nerves decelerate because the insulation for the nerves, also known as myelin, swells and eventually disappears. As a result to the damage of the nerves, the affected person will have progressive interference with bodily functions controlled by the nervous system such as speech, walking, memory, et cetera.
Researchers are still baffled about the real cause of multiple sclerosis. However, they think that a virus attacks the immune system and sense that myelin is the virus. As our body’s defender, the immune system goes on the defensive mode, and destroys the myelin. Scientists refer to multiple sclerosis as a disease of “autoimmunity”. Why? The immune system is supposed to protect the myelin, in the same ay dress fabrics protect your skin from the sunlight, but because of the “autoimmunity” status of the immune system, it destroys the myelin, thinking it is the virus that is attacking the body.
There are six different medications in treating Multiple Sclerosis. The first is interferon beta-1a (taken twice) and interferon beta-1b. Glatiramer acetate (Copaxone), mitoxantrone (an immunosuppressant) and natalizumab is also taken.
There are several goals that the patient and the doctor will consider during the treatment of this disorder. First, they will seek to reduce the number of attacks, attempt to slow the progression of the disease and lastly improve the speed of recovery from attacks.
