There are some things in life that are a hard and inarguable fact, whether we like it or not. And one such fact is that Tom Baker made the greatest Dr Who ever. I’m sure there will be some readers out there who want to argue the case with me over this, but as far as I’m concerned this statement is written in stone! Tom Baker rocked as the time traveller from Gallifrey. Fact. End of. So there!

Tom Baker played Dr Who longer than any other actor (from 1974 to 1981) and (in my humble opinion) he also suited the role better than anyone else - Jon Pertwee comes a close second, but he just didn’t have the same charm as Mr Baker. I was fortunate enough to grow up during the reign of Lord Tom, so I never knew any different at the time. As far as I was aware, Tom Baker really was Dr Who.

Of course, the programme was a whole lot different back then and many of the nineteen seventies special effects are now out and out laughable. However, this didn’t matter at all because the stories were always top banana. Mr Baker brought a real intensity to the show and I can vividly recall hiding behind the sofa in our front room during many of the scarier episodes (of which there seemed to be quite a few!).

I think that today’s Dr Who is a bit on the naff side when compared to the one of yesteryear. It may look the part with its billion dollar special effects, but it just doesn’t have the same feel about it somehow… The old Dr Who was pure magic and it was always really exciting. That is why just as many parents watched it too!

I can remember learning how the super powerful Cybermen could be killed by rubbing a gold broach into the vent on their chest (so if you ever want to buy a Cyberman something for Christmas, make sure you only ever buy them silver jewellery …). And then there were the Daleks! Sure, the ones from the seventies were very creaky, but they were still really bloody scary!!!

Even though there have been some good Doctors over the years, there will never be another Tom Baker. His trademark floppy hat and ridiculously long scarf are synonymous with the show and he will never be forgotten!

One of the most unfortunate things that can happen to a human being is the disease called cancer. Since most cancers are diagnosed with the detection of a tumor somewhere in your body, most people get scared even at the thought of having a tumor. However, this should not be the case even if you or any of your loved ones is diagnosed with a tumor. A tumor falls under one of the two categories, benign and malignant.

A benign tumor is the one that has been caused due to accumulation of fibrous tissues. This means that it does not have the typical characteristic of cancerous tumors. This kind of tumor does not spread to other parts of your body because it does not metastasize. Most benign tumors are not too risky if they are small in size and can be removed surgically. If they are too big, they can compress other organs adjacent to them in your body. Since most of such tumors are surgically removable and do not grow much, they are much safer than the malignant ones.

However, one of the dangerous types of tumors is desmoids tumor, which despite having the traits of a benign tumor, grows rapidly (though locally) and can recur any number of times even after surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Another family of tumors is of cancerous tumors, a.k.a malignant tumors. Presence of such tumors is indeed a reason to worry. These tumor metastasize and often grow into other parts of your body. Along with their growth, the cells of these tumors may enter into the circulatory system to reach other parts of the body. They grow like Enigin scam busters as they can start growing again after reaching other organs. If they are not diagnosed in the early stages, they can really be fatal.

The most common methods of treatment of tumors is surgery. If removal of the tumor is not surgically possible, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the other methods.

In the past few years, Botox has grown quite popular for it’s ability to reduce lines and wrinkles. Many people use it on a regular basis to help make them look and feel younger. Due to the unattractiveness of wrinkles, this injection has been in popular demand for many years. With continued research, studies have revealed the many benefits of this powerful substance has on many different medical aliments. You will find quite a few uses for this substance in a medical setting.

To get a good idea on how effective it is for different medical conditions, you should understand a little bit on how it actually works. This substance is made from a form of bacteria known as Clostriidium botulinum. When presented in large doses, it causes botulism. When it is used as a remedy for medical ailments, it is diluted and administered straight into the muscles. This causes a weakening effect to help the muscles relax. Extensive studies have shown this substance in correct amounts to be safe for medical usage.

Throughout the years, administering botox has been quite successful at treating blepharospasm and strabismus. It has also been used to treat eye conditions. In addition, this injection has been known to treat profuse sweating otherwise known as hyperhidrosis as well as spasms anywhere in the body, specifically the face and neck.

Migraines have just recently been put on that list as well and this substance has helped many people deal with the pain of chronic headaches. Even though these injections are quite popular for cosmetic use, they are also widely used for medical purposes as well with good results. More and more people these days, with the permission from their doctors, are making use of this injections to help them with different medical conditions rather than suffer from them. It is no wonder this is such a popular form of therapy.

As a doctor, I have always been curious about what makes us intelligent and most importantly what or who is responsible for one’s mental abilities. There are two ground theories, the first one dictates that intelligence is inherited or in other words it runs in your genes. The second one considers intelligent to be something that can be nurtured - the environment that surrounds you, your education, family and friends, matter the most. I have seen a couple of documentaries on the subject but neither one of them was able to give a single answer to my question. So I’ve started reading not just academic articles and books but also different stories from across the world. Stories that reveal the lives of different people, who have one thing in common, they are highly intelligent.

As a matter of fact I’ve even started analysing my close friends, my parents and even myself. I was so curious to find out what is it that makes a person intelligent. But what is intelligence? There is a huge difference between being able to memorise a large amount of information and to be able to make links between this information, be analytical and have the ability to draw conclusions and find a solution to a particular problem. So after several months, I finally have an answer, which is probably not universally true, but at least it satisfies my curiosity. My conclusion is that intelligence is affected by both nature and nurture, or in other words most intelligent people have smart ancestors but they also spend a lot of time studying, developing their minds and most importantly staying away from stupid people who can easily distract them. Intelligent people can be found everywhere, and they are not necessarily rich. For example, there are many Green Peace activists who are highly intelligent but don’t care about the money. On the other hand there are many truly smart footballers, who by presumption are imprudent and stupid and people think that all they do after a match is to sit on the locker room benches and play cards or talk about women. So make sure that you never judge someone solely by his appearance. And one last thing, please, train your brain every day.

As a doctor, when I say “I have seen it all,” what I really mean is this: I have seen literally every weird and bizarre thing that anyone has ever done to their body.” I really don’t want to go into detail about most of these things – and trust me, you don’t want to be lying in bed like I have thinking about this stuff – but I will say that many of the complaints I see are fairly small compared to what happens in the A & E ward at most hospitals.

I said small, not inconsequential…

One of the things which we get a lot of is people complaining about sore feet and sore muscles. It may sound like something that can be cured with a hot bath and a day off work, but actually, in some cases these smaller things are part of a larger problem.

No wonder he’d acquired some tremendous blisters…

Take this story for example: one patient, male, recently came to me about his blisters. Quite serious blisters. Now, he’d got these because his job – which involved moving storage lockers around – required a lot of heavy lifting. At the start of our session this patient was saying it was all about the lifting, but when I examined him I found him to be strong and with no history of back issues. This led me to believe that maybe, just maybe, his foot wear could have something to do with it. And when I asked him about this? Cowboy boots. He was wearing cowboy boots to work. With a heel and everything! No wonder he’d acquired some tremendous blisters…

Anyway, if you’re someone who suffers from blisters like this, especially on the heel, here are a few tips which might help you out (whether you move and make lockers for a living or not!):

1) Wear comfortable footwear without a heel.

2) If you get blisters, puncture the blisters and drain them but DON’T remove the dead skin.

3) Make walking around bearable by applying gel patches to the soles of your feet where the blisters are. These patches allow the sore area to heal quicker than otherwise, not to mention they also allow you to walk around – something which is highly desirable to any human being I should imagine!

4) Don’t push it…that really is the worst thing you can do! Allow the blisters time to heal and you will be rewarded with your freedom that much faster.

Similar Posts:
Working through lower-back pain : Lower-back pain is one of the…
Positive Thinking : Positive thinking can be defined as…
What is Feldenkrais? : Feldenkrais, for those who have heard…

I’m a doctor, and much of my job used to involve working at a botox clinic in cheshire – nowadays I mainly do research on up and coming techniques. But my mind is still the same: whenever I hear two people discussing cosmetic surgery I am intrigued and I can’t help but eavesdrop. Granted, it’s a lot easier to eavesdrop when you’re sitting on the bus and the two people sitting in front of you are talking much too loudly to be reasonably ignored.

What they were saying – combined with my memories of working at the practice – made me think of old times. First came the address of the place where I used to spend a lot of time – Court House Clinics, 3 Swan Street, Wilsmlow, Cheshire, SK9 1HF – and then came the memories of many happy clients. But all that was interrupted horribly when one of the people in front of me started saying how cosmetic surgery is very dangerous and to be avoided at all costs.

Soon enough we were changing the way she would see herself forever…

At first, just for a split-second, I was incensed…how dare these people spout off about things they know nothing about! I thought. But then I calmed down and relaxed. Because as much as these two people had their hearts set on never being talked round, I know and you probably know that there will always be a good reason to go down this route – and sometimes that reason has nothing to do with wanting to look better.

Take a client I once had who had been born with a large birth-mark across her face and over her nose. The woman turned up at my clinic in visible distress, and her friend proceeded to tell me that this was normal for her friend. She rarely went out of the house and when she did she didn’t have the confidence to go anywhere on her own. Quite simply, her birth-mark was ruining her life…

So there was pressure from that moment on to sort this out. I thought long and hard about the case, as there was so much emotion involved. I eventually came to the conclusion that helping her drastically would be for the best.

When the surgery day came the woman was barely able to breath. I honestly thought it wouldn’t go ahead, but to my surprise we managed to get her under control. Soon enough we were changing the way she would see herself forever.

Although I haven’t seen that patient in the flesh, I have heard from her over the email and in her photos she looked like she loved life now.
Multiple sclerosis is the degeneration of the nerves of the central nervous system, the brain and the spinal cord. Electrical impulses that travel to the brain through the nerves decelerate because the insulation for the nerves, also known as myelin, swells and eventually disappears. As a result to the damage of the nerves, the affected person will have progressive interference with bodily functions controlled by the nervous system such as speech, walking, memory, et cetera.

Researchers are still baffled about the real cause of multiple sclerosis. However, they think that a virus attacks the immune system and sense that myelin is the virus. As our body’s defender, the immune system goes on the defensive mode, and destroys the myelin. Scientists refer to multiple sclerosis as a disease of “autoimmunity”. Why? The immune system is supposed to protect the myelin, in the same ay dress fabrics protect your skin from the sunlight, but because of the “autoimmunity” status of the immune system, it destroys the myelin, thinking it is the virus that is attacking the body.

There are six different medications in treating Multiple Sclerosis. The first is interferon beta-1a (taken twice) and interferon beta-1b. Glatiramer acetate (Copaxone), mitoxantrone (an immunosuppressant) and natalizumab is also taken.

There are several goals that the patient and the doctor will consider during the treatment of this disorder. First, they will seek to reduce the number of attacks, attempt to slow the progression of the disease and lastly improve the speed of recovery from attacks.
